What Does a Car Buying Consultant Do?

What they do, how they differ from a broker, how they charge, and when one is worth hiring.

The short answer

A car buying consultant is someone you hire to shop for a car on your behalf. You tell them what you want and what you want to spend, and they find matching vehicles, deal with the dealerships, negotiate the price or payment, and bring you the options. You still choose the car and buy it yourself.

You’ll also see them called a car buying concierge, car buying agent, personal car shopper, or car buying advocate. The names overlap, and what matters is what the service actually does and who pays it.

What a car buying consultant does

  • Narrows down what you want: the vehicle, trim, must-have features, budget, and whether leasing, financing, or paying cash fits best.
  • Searches dealer inventory so you don’t have to call, email, or visit lot after lot.
  • Negotiates with dealers for the best price or monthly payment they can get, without you going back and forth with a salesperson.
  • Brings you a short list of real vehicles with the pricing laid out, so you can compare them side by side.
  • Flags fees and add-ons that are worth questioning before you sign.
  • Helps with your trade-in and points out rebates or incentives you might qualify for.
  • Lines up the pickup with the dealership so the final visit is short.

Consultant vs. concierge vs. broker

Consultant, concierge, and agent are mostly different names for the same idea: someone who works for you, the buyer, and is paid by you. Some lean more toward advice and some handle the whole search, so ask what’s included.

A car broker is different. Brokers are often licensed to arrange vehicle sales and may be paid in part or in full by the dealer or seller, through a commission or a markup built into the price. That isn’t automatically bad, but it’s worth knowing who is paying the person you’re working with, because it can shape which cars and deals they bring you.

Either way, a good rule is to buy directly from the dealership, with the dealership’s paperwork, so you know exactly what you’re signing.

How car buying consultants charge

Pricing varies a lot from one service to the next. The common setups are:

  • Flat fee: one set price for the service, no matter which car you choose. Easy to compare and doesn’t reward pushing you toward a pricier car.
  • Percentage of savings: a cut of how much they get off the price. Make sure you agree up front on what the savings are measured from.
  • Paid by the dealer: you pay nothing directly, but the person is being paid by the other side of the deal.

It’s usually worth it if you…

  • Don’t have the time or patience to deal with several dealerships
  • Find negotiating stressful, or feel you’ve overpaid in the past
  • Want a specific vehicle or trim that’s hard to find near you
  • Are comparing a lease against a loan and want someone to check the numbers
  • Want the dealership visit to be about picking up the car, not a long afternoon of negotiating

You might not need one if you…

  • Enjoy negotiating and already know the market for the car you want
  • Are buying a low-priced used car where a fee would be a big share of the price
  • Have a dealer you trust and are happy with the pricing they offer

What to ask before you hire one

  • How do you charge, and when do I pay?
  • Are you paid by anyone besides me, like a dealer or lender?
  • Will I buy directly from the dealership, with their paperwork?
  • Do you handle new and used cars, and leasing as well as financing?
  • Can you help with my trade-in?
  • Who makes the final choice of car? (The answer should always be you.)
  • Be wary of anyone who guarantees a specific discount before they’ve looked at your deal.

How CarBuyAI works

CarBuyAI is a personal car-buying concierge. We aren’t brokers: we work for you, and you buy directly from the dealership. After a short intake, our team checks whether we can get somewhere around your price range. Only once we know we can take your deal do we ask you to pay our flat, one-time fee of $1,000.

Your shopper then works dealer inventory near you, negotiates, and sends you a portfolio of options with pricing included. You pick the car, and we schedule your pickup. We help with new and used cars, leasing, financing, and cash purchases. We don’t guarantee a specific price or discount, but we only take a deal when we know we can deliver on it.
